I am going on a month long camping trip, and need to get a durable, fixed blade. I am looking at the SOG seal pup M37, for its toughness, price, and great reviews. The blade is 5" long, and I am wondering if you need a permit, or license to buy anything over a certain length

5″may sound like you need a liecence for that because in colorado its 3 and 3 quarters and you are 1 and 1 qauters more than that……..seems a little too much for any state!

In washington i think its 3in and under is not a deadly weapon but i dont think you need a license at all you just cant carry it concealed. 5″ should be fine and no one will know if you dont misuse it.

Five inch blade should be fine as long as you have a good reason to have it. If you are using it for camping you shouldn’t have a problem. Sog makes a great knife but I would look into Ka-Bar.
Before you buy any knife check the Rc. value.
It is a test that tells you how strong the steel is the higher the numbers the better the steel and the longer the blade will hold its edge. look for something with Rc. 57 – 58 or higher.
