What is the difference between a praying mantis and a ‘walking stick?’?

mamacedar asked:

We have one of each living on our deck . They have been out there for over a week. They are within 6 feet of each other.

The mantis stays on a plant and the walking stick stays on the side of the house or the plate glass window.

Will they get along, ignore each other, or fight? I will move one of them to another deck if they are enemies.

Well, a praying mantis is a predator. It will attempt to capture and eat other insects.

I don’t know much about walking sticks, but I thought they drank tree sap or something along those lines.

If you want the walking stick to live, keep it away from the mantis. If they meet, it won’t be much of a fight.

Praying mantis usually eats insects that they can grab with their front legs. Just consider the size of the mantis: if it’s way bigger than the walking stick, then the walking stick is in danger of being the the mantis’ next meal. However, if the walking stick is almost the same size of the mantis, then there won’t be any problem. By instinct, the mantis knows that it will do it more harm than good if it tries to prey on something bigger than itself.

Praying Mantis are considered Mantids and walking skicks are considered leaf or stick insects. Mantids are carnivores that kill and eat other insects and creatures. Leaf/Stick insects are harmless herbivores that eat plants and leaves.
