Walking sticks, also called trekking poles, pilgrim's staffs, hiking poles or hiking sticks, are put to use by hikers for a wide range of reasons. They are most often used as a support when going up hill or as a brake when going down hill. They also help to maintain balance when crossing streams, swamps or other rough terrain. They can be used to clear spiderwebs; part thick bushes or grass obscuring the trail; to feel for obstacles in the path; to test mud and puddles for depth; and as a defense against wild animals. More ornate sticks are made for avid hikers, and are often adorned with small trinkets or medallions as remembrances of past expeditions.
