We have a 6, 4 and 2 year old and instead of taking the usual family camping trip to the lake, we want to go somewhere else. We are thinking of driving to Mt. Rushmore. Just wondering if this is a good idea for a family with those age kids? Will they like it? Are there other things for them to do? If so, please suggest some fun activities for the whole family in that area.

It is fantastic…and lots of things to do nearby. If at all possible, do try to go to an evening viewing at Mt. Rushmore as well as the daytime. The evening program is fantastic. Evans Plunge is a GREAT place for kids, about an hour away. Custer state park has lots of wildlife to see. there is a nice water park in one of the nearby towns. Go on the PIGTAIL roads…and bridges…there are donkeys that wander those roads…love people and will eat out of your hand, or pocket…or just plain eat your pocket! Be sure to have a bag of carrots or apples in the car. See sites below. Just saw whar “ANNE “said. don’t know how long ago that was, or what other things there were nearby to do bck then, but my kids and grandkids love it and wanted to return. It was actually totally “remeodled”…not the mountain…but the visitor center and ampitheater and educational buildings around it just a few years ago and is very attractive now. The whole complex is huge. Your kids are young and will not understand the meaning of the mountain, but there are plenty of kid friendly activities in the nearby areas to go to. They will have a short attention span…but they will LOVE Evans Plunge.

no it is not! I went there when I was six, and it…was….a….big freakin rock. There’s nothing cool about it. It is on the same side as the sun and it was in my face so I couldn’t see it. There was alot of sweaty people outside and the gift shop was crappy. Just don’t. Say it with me… “seaworld” much better in San antonio, very family friendly.

I wholeheartedly agree with Charlie – he’s given you a good list of things to see & do. In addition, there’s the Bear Country park: which isn’t far from Mount Rushmore.
As you can see from the other answer, this somewhat depends on the kids too though. Not everyone appreciates the area. If your kids are used to camping, they should have a good time in South Dakota.
