I say a ALICE pack, yes, yes I know, some people **** them others love them. I’m a lover of them, all depends on the person. They aren’t the most comfortably packs but they do their job well, They’re in the right price range if you’re looking to save money. The most important thing about them is that you stack and load your gear in the right way and order, very important, affects how it moves and handles and two make sure you adjust it to fit you properly, also very important. Some come with water proof inside pocket liners, they helps, but make sure you get some good ones, when mine came they smelt like they had stored $#!+ in them, literally. Here’s a link to give you idea to see what they cost and look like.
I own both the Large And Medium, go Large, more room and work better with the frame, your going to want the frame, a medium works okay w/ a frame but you don’t NEED it, but it helps, a large you must have a frame w/ of it will kill your back. Also just google Large Alice pack too to see more.
As for what to place in your bag, just simply do a Google search for what you need in your bag, also if you look into the Yahoo Answers Camping section they’ve had plenty of survival lists on there so I’m sure you can find one, if not piece together your own.
For skills in Survival just do a simple search again, basic, I know, but it works. Here’s a few sites that may help you out and point you in the right direction.
Hopes this helps. If your don’t want to spend that much either just a standard back pack works well too.

if you stick to the basics you can do it with a empty can of altoids. i have a book of matches, a mini bic lighter, signal mirror, tin foil, snares, fishing hooks, a mini pocket knife, a few pieces of cloth an bottle of instant skin. any outdoors man worth his salt can survive with this.
