How do you make a old cedar tree limb into a nice lookng walking stick?

chad R asked:

I was walking in the woods the other day and found a cedar snag. The roots had dried up and it looks cool. The outside of it is dried up and does not look very good but the inside still looks like cedar. How can I make a good looking walking stick out of it. get rid of the old dead stuff and get to the nice piece of the wood?

Sand it – start with a 80 grit or so and sand it smooth – go to a 200 grit or higher to polish and refine – coat with tung or lemon oil and polish it some more. Should be beautiful!

well measure it to fit you

then take as much of the dead stuff off as possible

then start sanding and sand some more until smooth
(don’t completely sand off nubs sticking out just take a little off
    this will give it character)

next if your going to use stain do this or leave it the way it is
    (leave set until dry)

    next varnish
(should do this to keep protected well 2-4 times this will keep out water and other things)

you can even wrap a peice of suede around the top for a hand grip tie on with leather string

Buy yourself a sharp pocket knife, a sharpening stone, and go to town. you might even pick up a new hobby doing so.

I use a utility knife, find a spot to sit and work on your walking stick, and wittle away. Forget about production, take your kids out fishing and when your not baiting lines, work on your stick. This world is bent on production and profit, let the walking sticks go. It’s a fun thing to share.
