I used to be a boyscount, and miss the great outdoors. Now, me and a few friends are looking to get away from everyday life and "rough" it in the wilderness for a night or two. We live in NY (niagara falls), and are willing to travel in-state. I've found a few "tent camp sites" (mainly in the adirondacks) but they provide electric, tents, and other amenities which adds up the cost. We are looking for just a basic location where we can pitch a tent, set-up a few lanterns, and relax. If anyone knows of any sites, please let me know. If it is near a lake it would be even better. Thanks!

NY state has although the Adirondacks called primitive camps sites. You have a outhouse and maybe a table but that’s all. I’ve camped at a lot of them up around fish creek near saranack lake. My sister had like a atlas of them but I can’t remember the name of it. Get on the computer and get ahold ot the ny dec maybe they can give you some info. there free and first come first serve and mostly on the water.

Camping Discounters
only actual campgrounds offer electric and amenities…i know hundreds of spots that are state land with no amenties and free…i wont give away my best spots but i’ll recommend the Moose River Plains in old forge area–its miles of backcountry dirt roads with campsites all along–lots of hikes and lakes in the area plus the village of old forge

Hey, I used to live in WNY and I really enjoyed going to Allegheny National Forest. Its right on the NY, PA border, closer than the Adirondacks. There are a good amount of campsites right along the Allegheny Reservoir that require a 2 – 7 mile hike in. You can also access them by boat. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit. There are usually 1 or 2 outhouses depending on the area you go. My personal favorite is the Morrison area. Its a 4 mile hike in and you are right on the reservoir. I think it is about $14 a night per site, if you have a bigger group you might need 2 sites. I think its 4 or 6 people allowed to a site. If you go take fives and singles, cause there is no change.
You should definitely check it out its a fun place.
