A quality down sleeping bag can be fairly expensive, so you definitely want to make sure you take good care of it. When cared for properly, they can last for many years and provide you with plenty of warmth and comfort on your camping and backpacking trips.
When it comes to washing down sleeping bags, you need to be careful so that you don't damage the down. Also, only wash it when it really needs it. Each time you wash your sleeping bag it will lose just a bit of its loft. Don't take it to the dry cleaners, as they use solvents that may end up stripping away some of the natural oil that are in the down.
You should either hand wash it in a bath tub or use a front load washer at a laundromat. Use cold water and a gentle cycle on the washing machine. Use a mild soap like Ivory Flakes or Woolite and do not add any fabric softener or bleach. Tumble dry in a dryer on the lowest heat setting.
When it comes to storing your down sleeping bag, do not store it in the stuff sack that comes with it. Your sleeping bag will start to lose its loft if it remains compressed for a long time. Use a larger bag or hang it up flat in a closet.
When you are out on your camping and backpacking trips, air out your bag each day. If possible, during the day turn it inside out and let it air out in the breeze and sun. Or set it out once you get to your camp site. Also, try to keep it as clean as possible so you won't have to wash it so often. Lay your sleeping bag on a pad or tarp.
